This Master-Thesis focuses on the identification, examination, conservation and future presentation of a pair of Carl Zeiss Jena binoculars from the time of World War I. It will be part of an exhibition of the reconstructed German trench-system 'Kilianstollen', which has been excavated in Alsace and will be shown in the Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr Dresden. Archaeology of the modern era, restoration of objects from the 20th century, reconstructions of World War I trench-systems (and their varying intentions) and the ethical approach to personal belongings of victims of wars will be discussed before choosing appropriate methods of conservation. Temporary consolidation is executed with molten Cyclododecan, and later with an impregnation of the metal surfaces with microcrystalline wax. Further measures of conservation include methods used in textile and leather conservation, such as fixing leather with a nylon fabric ('conservation net').
